In the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy Marwari merchant families competed to build the most magnificent frescoed mansions, with master painters adorning every wall with mythological scenes, Mughal court life, and even scenes of European technology. Itinerary
DAY-WISE ITINERARY
Depart Delhi at 07:00 AM for the 260 km drive to Mandawa in the Shekhawati region (~5 hours via NH-48). Check in to your heritage hotel. Begin a guided heritage walk visiting the Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli, Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli, and Murmuria Haveli — each covered in vivid frescoes depicting Mahabharata tales, portraits of Radha-Krishna, hunting scenes, and fascinatingly, the first aeroplanes and motor cars seen by Marwari merchants. Evening exploration of the bazaar. Dinner at heritage hotel with folk music. Overnight at Mandawa.
Morning visit to Fatehpur Shekhawati town (30 km) — visit the Nadine Le Prince Cultural Centre, Poddar Haveli Museum, and Goenka Double Haveli. Continue to Nawalgarh known for the extraordinary Morarka and Poddar havelis. Lunch in Nawalgarh before departing for Delhi ~02:00 PM, arriving ~08:00 PM.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

October to March is ideal. The Shekhawati Festival (typically February) celebrates the region's folk arts. December–January is particularly pleasant for heritage walking.

  • The Mandawa Castle itself is a heritage experience worth the premium.
